What picture enters your mind when you consider the word peace?
A quiet beach somewhere? Perhaps a big comfy chair and a hot drink next to a warm fire? Some days, my version of peace is simply a few minutes of respite from my kids and their chaos! But maybe you’d go a bit deeper and say that peace is an absence of stress, anxiety, or worry.
There’s one thing each of those visions of peace have in common: they’re all based on our circumstances. And circumstantial peace is basically all the world has to offer. If you’re feeling stressed, treat yourself! While self-care certainly matters, the peace it provides is always going to be temporary. Our circumstances are constantly changing, so too will our sense of peace.
But there is another peace. A peace that came to earth in the form of a baby over two thousand years ago. He was called the Prince of Peace, and shortly before his death, he spoke these words to his followers:
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you; I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
Jesus says that peace is our inheritance as children of God! And this is a fundamental, rock-solid peace that cannot be taken away from us by any mere circumstance. No, this isn’t simply the peace of a serene and sunny beach. Christ’s peace lasts even when the storm rolls in, sheltering us from the wind and rain with strength and love.
Even in the midst of a year filled with distress and turmoil, chaos and heartache… Christmas is a reminder that Jesus offers us His peace. We can allow our weary hearts to finally rest in the full confidence that He has overcome the world.
Thanks be to God!
