Do you know anyone who’s notoriously difficult to get on the phone? Maybe somebody who, when you’re trying to get a hold of them, you call their spouse first?

I confess, I’m usually “that guy.”

See, it’s not that I don’t enjoy talking with people, I just like to do it on my own terms. I much prefer coffee dates and lunch meetings than phone calls. I think it’s that I don’t like to be caught off-guard, or feeling like I can’t answer a question in the moment.

Phone communicators, get ready to be really frustrated: I’ve even gone as far as setting up a nifty little auto-response text to phone calls when I send them to voicemail. We all have our flaws… mine just happen to be a little more enabled by technology.

As much as I love the “what’s up?” text my phone automatically sends people, there’s always a certain phone call I will answer: the 12:45 AM call. Those are the ones that get my immediate, undivided attention. Those are the ones where I start getting dressed as I answer.

Reason #3,452,975 that I’m happy God isn’t like me: every prayer to God is the 12:45 AM phone call. They all matter to Him. They really do.

My translation of Psalm 120:1 says this: “I took my troubles to the Lord; I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer.”

I constantly have to remind myself that God isn’t waiting on my perfect prayer, or a convenient time to follow up with me. He is always available, always working, and always loving. This verse gives just a glimpse of the accessibility we enjoy with God.

Isn’t that a great thought? We will never catch God off-guard. He knows our burdens and is ready for us to bring them to Him.
