A New Routine

Last fall, Randy’s brother Dwayne received news no family wants to hear: he had brain cancer. As Dwayne began the long journey of appointments and treatments, Randy made a decision. He would be there for his brother and drive him to every appointment he could. Those drives meant a lot of time together in Dwayne’s pickup, and before long, Randy established a little routine of his own.

“I got in the truck, and I heard the country music playing, so I just simply turned it over to KLRC,” Randy remembers. But the next time Randy climbed into the truck, the country music was back. So, Randy changed it to KLRC again. For a while, the same thing happened.

Dwayne would change the station. Randy would change it back. Until one day when the station no longer changed...

As they drove to appointments, certain songs would catch their attention. One of those songs was MercyMe’s “Make It Well,” a song you’ve probably heard many times on KLRC.

For Randy, its message hit especially close to home. “It’s not well. We’re not well. We’re hurting,” he remembers thinking as they listened. Randy and Dwayne didn’t need to pretend everything was okay. In the middle of the fear, pain, and uncertainty, they could simply listen and be reminded that Jesus was there with them.

“We would find ourselves just stopping and listening,” Randy told us. “Instead of talking, we would just stop and listen as we were driving.”

Your generosity helped put a reminder of God’s presence right there on the drive to a cancer appointment. And while you couldn’t have known Dwayne would be listening that day, God did, and He worked through you to make sure KLRC was there when he needed it.

But my favorite part of Randy’s story is what happened next.  Eventually, Dwayne stopped changing the station. Randy recently asked his brother if he was still listening to KLRC. “Oh, yeah,” Dwayne told him. “I haven’t taken it off since you got it on there.”

Today, one of Dwayne’s favorite parts of the day is simply going outside, climbing into his pickup, and listening. Randy describes it this way: “He’s just sitting there relaxed and listening to the radio and just resting... resting in Christ.”
