Mission: To promote literacy by providing free instruction in speaking, reading, and writing English to adults in the Siloam Springs area of Benton County.
About: Dogwood Literacy Council (DLC) is a community-based nonprofit 502(c)(3) agency dedicated to promoting adult literacy in Siloam Springs and the surrounding communities. DLC was founded and incorporated in 1990.
Services: Our main activity is tutoring students in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing English. This is done either one-on-one or in small groups. We provide training to the volunteer tutors. We supply the necessary instructional materials. We pre-test and assign students to tutors. After 60 hours of instruction we post-test students. Most meet for two hours twice a week. We also have classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-8pm. We have three classes beginning, intermediate, and advanced ESL. Class size varies from 4 to 8 students.
Volunteer Opportunities: Our main volunteer opportunity and need is for volunteer tutors. Minimum requirements are to have at least a highschool diploma or GED, a friendly personality, and a desire to help other adults to read and write. Many of our students are Spanish speaking, but tutors do not need to be bilingual to do an excellent job of tutoring!
