The Desjaralis Family has been dealing with some extremely challenging situations in the last year. Single mom, Courtney, and her two young children have lost everything.
Courtney and her daughter were watching a movie in the living room where she had fallen asleep. Her son came out of his room, sharing he couldn’t fall asleep, which wasn’t normal, so Courtney had him lay on the couch and he fell straight to sleep. The following morning, at 4:00AM, Courtney woke up to the electricity in the home going out. She didn’t have her glasses on but she could tell that her son’s bedroom door was slowly closing. At first, Courtney thought there was an intruder, so she sprang up to open the door and was met with a wall of smoke blocking her entrance. Finding her glasses, Courtney realized that the entire house was now filled with smoke and her son’s bedroom was on fire!
Getting the kids to safety outside, Courtney called 911. However, by the time the fire department was finished putting out the fire out, the entire house was unlivable… The family lost everything in the fire. The authorities determined that the fire began while Courtney’s son’s Chromebook from school was charging. It had become too hot and caused the fire. For various reasons, insurance would not cover replacement costs.
Bouncing from one Airbnb to another for 3 months, the Desjaralis family finally found a new home. Yet only two weeks after signing the lease, Courtney was let go from her job due to taking PTO the week of the house fire. And to add to it, Courtney was involved in a car accident that wrecked her family vehicle. Through it all, Courtney continues to work two jobs while trying to provide for her family. What’s more is that both of her young children have been having severe mental health issues because of the fire. Courtney continues to put her trust in God during this season of struggle.
