On Sunday, May 26th there were seven confirmed tornadoes that touched down in Benton County affecting many areas including Decatur, Centerton, and Rogers. Many people experienced devastating damage. Some, like the Johnson family, lost everything in the storm. The Johnson Family includes three young daughters and their 77 year old mother-in-law who goes by Nana Shirley.
Relocating their family after the storm has been challenging to say the least, paying out of pocket for hotels and AirBnBs over several weeks until finally getting into a rental home. Lots of time was missed at work as Destine and Cody had to secure a more stable housing situation for their family. This also meant a significant loss of income. Since falling behind on bills it's been nearly impossible to catch back up and supplying a wonderful Christmas for their children is beyond their reach.
Even before the tornadoes tore through their lives, the Johnson Family had been facing a series of struggles. Lilly, their middle daughter was born 6 weeks early and has had struggles with her eyes, requiring several surgeries to help correct her eye sight. Nana Shirley has been through two separate cancer battles: one with breast cancer and another with throat cancer, requiring 16 rounds of radiation. Praise God, she still remains cancer free. Most recently, Nana Shirley suffered a broken knee which she is still recovering from. Destine had to leave her job to care for Nana's needs.
The Johnson Family remains active in their church and continue to hold onto their faith and they serve others around them.
