If I were a silent voice inside your head helping you to build healthy relationships, you might hear me whispering in your ear something you’ve heard all your life: it’s "The Golden Rule."
That’s right, it comes straight out of scripture from Matthew 7:12, "Therefore however you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." The Golden Rule rolls off the tongue like water off a duck's back. It has long been known as "The Standard" for how to treat others the way God intended, resulting in lasting healthy relationships.
So why is it so hard to do? When someone is kind to you, it’s easy to be kind back. But let’s be real. When someone is unkind, is your first inclination to be kind back to them? Hence the tension of The Golden Rule.
But God says, "Do it anyway!" God designed us to need Him, to be uniquely dependent on Him. That means moment by moment and in all relationships so that we can allow Him to respond through us instead of us responding on our own. Personal experience allows me to tell you that “on my own” gets me in the flesh every time! I don’t know about you, but I need Him desperately when I’m in a difficult relationship and I’m left to respond the way I want to be treated. It’s not natural for me to not defend or say something I might regret.
Don’t let The Golden Rule just be a memory verse to you, let it transform your life by allowing God access to work thru you!
