If I were a silent voice inside your head helping you to build healthy relationships, you might hear me ask the question, "Do you choose healthy relationships over being right?"
Now there’s an intriguing question. Can the two coexist? I would say the answer is yes and no. If you value relationship more than you value being right, then I would say the answer is a quick yes. If you don’t, it’s a fast no.
But doesn’t choosing relationship over having to be right all the time seem obvious? No. Humans seem to have this intrinsic need to control something. We know we’re right and so we go on a mission to prove it! The tension is that you might be the one that is in fact right, but you also might lose the relationship over fighting the battle to prove that you are!
When talking about healthy relationships, the word sacrifice will come into play. Sacrifice usually involves us doing something for someone else that is outside of our comfort zone. However, we do it anyway because it benefits those we love and the relationship we’re in. That may mean that sometimes we sacrifice winning the "right to be right" in order to save the relationship.
So it's a good question to ask... will you choose relationship over being right?
