ON THE AIR The Morning Show with Mark & Keri

Morning Show Blog

I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day. I never have been, but working in a flower shop solidified my lack of love for the day. I tend to push back against things that are cheesy or contrived, and Valentine’s Day has always felt that way to me.

If I’m honest, love has often felt that way too. I don’t know about you, but I have some pretty warped ideas about what love looks like. I paid a therapist lots of money to help me replace the lie that “love is earned” that I had believed for so long with the truth that “love is a gift”. Love has let me down a lot in the past. You too?

The Bible says that we love because He first loved us. That verse has led me on a journey of rediscovering God’s love over the last few years. If I don’t understand His love, then how can I love others or let others love me? So, I’ve been praying a simple prayer “God, show me what Your love looks like”. And can I tell you what I discovered?

His love is radically different from any other love I’ve ever experienced. God’s love isn’t a magic “genie in a bottle” type of love that leads to wishes coming true, eternal youth, or days of endless happiness. No, it’s better than that. His love is a steady, constant, unconditional, always love.

It always protects,
Always trusts,
Always hopes,
Always perseveres.
Love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:7

This week we’re going to be bombarded with reminders of “love”. Candy hearts, flowers and chocolates, cheesy songs and movies… maybe you love it all. Maybe, like me, you’re a bit cynical about it all. Maybe this Valentine’s Day will be filled with declarations of love and presents. Maybe it will be you alone with Netflix and your good friends Ben & Jerry. Whatever you are facing this week can you take just a moment to pause in the middle of it to ask a simple question, “God, show me what Your love looks like.” I have a feeling He has some pretty cool things to show you.
