Organization Information

Mission: The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

About: As the largest voluntary health organization in the United States, the ACS is passionately committed to saving lives from cancer. We’re working to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays- a world where cancer never steals another year from anyone’s life. We combine our relentless passion with the wisdom of a century of experience to make this vision a reality, and we get results.

Services: We save lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and fighting back.

Stay Well – We help you take steps to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest, most treatable stage. Through the Quit For Life program, we help people quit smoking by providing them with resources they need to make a quit attempt and stay smoke-free.

Get Well – We’re in your corner around the clock to guide you through a cancer experience. We know that every cancer patient is a fighter. Our phone line, at 1-800-227-2345, are open every minute of every day and night to help connect people with the answers they need. We also offer free wigs and prosthesis to women going through treatment in our Look Good, Feel Better program that helps women with cancer improve their self-image.

Find Cures – We’re getting results by investing in research that help us understand cancer’s causes, determining how best to prevent it, an discover new ways to cure it.  We fund beginning researchers with cutting-edge ideas early in their careers- 46 of whom have gone to win the Nobel Prize.

Fight Back – We help pass laws that defeat cancer and rally communities to join the fight. Our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events unite communities across the nation to help save lives and to get to the finish line faster.

Volunteer Opportunities: The need for volunteers is ongoing.

Relay for Life – A life changing event that brings together people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones who have lost to the disease, and to fight back to put an end to the disease.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – This is held every October in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Every event is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness, and to raise money.
